SPEEDSTERS: Owen van Krimpen swims during the Virginia Swimming
Long Course Age Group Championships in Newport News Aug. 2.
Van Krimpen qualified for the Long Course Zone Meet in Penn State,
Penn. along with Austin Tate, Josh Thompson, Justin Barden, Alex
Montes de Oca, Zach Switzer and Annie Boone.The event will be held
Aug. 12.
Nineteen area swimmers competed in the Virginia Swimming Long
Course Age Group Championships, Thursday, July 30, 2009 through
Sunday, August 2, 2009 in Newport News. Culpeper and BASS Swimming
were well represented in this state level meet.
During this championship the swimmers competed with other
swimmers within their own age group from all over the state of
Virginia.
David Dixon, Austin Tate, Jake Thompson and Josh Thompson competed
in the boys 10 & Under age group, Owen van Krimpen, Benjamin
Paschina, Chase Sigloh, Nick Switzer and Ryan Tate competed in the
boys 11-12 age group, Justin Barden, Ryan Hofmann, Alex Montes de
Oca, Peter Paschina and Zach Switzer competed in boys 13-14 age
group.
Annie Boone, Kara Morgan McHaney, Josie Snow and Kara Taylor
competed in 11-12 girls while Michaela Saunders competed in 13-14
girls age group.
The meet started with the 400-meter Freestyle. Annie Boone in
the girls 11-12 group, finished in 5:13.28 and Owen van Krimpen in
the boys 11-12 group, finished in 4:55.26. Josh Thompson in the
boys 10 and under group, got his first medal by finishing third in
5:12.47.
On Friday Austin Tate finished third in 41.89 and Josh Thompson
finished fourth in 42.57 in the 50-meter breaststroke within the
boys 10 and under age group. Josh Thompson finished third in the
200-meter freestyle in 2:30.26.
Owen van Krimpen won the 100-meter butterfly finals in the boys
11-12 age group in 1:08.34 while Alex Montes de Oca finished second
in 1:00.76 and Justin Barden finished in fifth swimming 1:02.11 on
the same event in the boys 13-14 age group.
The 13-14 boys relay team consisting out of Alex, Justin, Ryan and
Zach finished fourth in 400-meter medley relay.
On Saturday Josh Thompson finished third in 2:52.18 and Austin
Tate finished seventh in 2:59.08 in the 200-meter individual medley
for boys 10 and under. Both boys were even more successful in their
next event. Josh finished first in 1:29.44 and Austin got third
place with his 1:32.85 in the 100-meter breaststroke. Together with
Jake Thompson and David Dixon, these boys managed to get the third
place in the 400-meter medley relay.
During Saturday evening finals Alex Montes de Oca finished fourth
in the 200-meter butterfly for boys 13-14 in 2:15.71. For that same
stroke and distance Owen van Krimpen got fourth place in his age
group in 2:41.97. Justin Barden got his fourth place in the 50-
meter freestyle in 26.30. In the 100-meter backstroke for
boys 13-14 Justin finished second in 1:02.89 and Alex seventh in
1:05.27. In the girls 11-12 50-meter backstroke Annie Boone
finished fourth with 33.99. In the last event of that evening,
being the 100-meter individual medley for boys 11-12 Owen took
possession of fourth place in 2:38.71.
During the last day Josh Thompson finished fifth in the
100-meter freestyle in 1:11.63. The last event for Josh, Austin
Tate, Jake Thompson and David Dixon in this meet was the 400- meter
freestyle relay. They finished third in 4:58.56 with only two-tenth
of a second short for second place.
In the Sunday evening finals Owen van Krimpen finished sixth in
the 200-meter breaststroke in 3:04.00. In the 200-meter backstroke
for boys 13-14 it was Justin Barden who finished second in 2:16.26,
Alex Montes de Oca who finished fourth in 2:18.14 and Zach Switzer
who finished seventh in 2:22.23. In their next race, the 200-meter
individual medley, Alex finished third in 2:20.59, Justin finished
fourth in 2:21.59 and Zach finished fifth in 2:23.47.
Once again the 13-14 boys relay team consisting out of Alex,
Justin, Zach and Ryan Hofmann finished as fourth in 400-meter
freestyle relay in 4:00.00.
The last race of the meet was the boys 11-12 50-meter Butterfly.
Owen van Krimpen was able to finish that race just like Michael
Phelps did his 100-meter butterfly in Beijing. Owen won the event
in 30.38 after coming from behind his opponent, to beat him by
eight-hundredth of a second.
During this meet Austin Tate, Josh Thompson, Owen van Krimpen,
Justin Barden, Alex Montes de Oca, Zach Switzer and Annie Boone
qualified for the 2009 Long course zone meet in Penn State,
Pennsylvania. This meet will be held between 12 and 15 August 2009.
